Antec Leyden has developed system solutions for the on-line
analysis of neurotransmitters in microdialysates. An on-line
system can be connected to one dialysis station, if time resolution
is an issue. Using a 14 port external valve a time resolution
of less than 3 minutes can be obtained. If high throughput is
a requirement, the system can be used to analyse 3 microdialysis
stations in parallel. Microdialysis systems are optimised for
analysis of small sample volumes at picomolar detection limits.

For the analysis of microdialysates we selected the VT03
electrochemical cell. This cell not only has an excellent reproducibility
but also the best possible detection sensitivity. Time resolution
depends not only on dialysis flow rate and injection volume
but also on chromatogram duration in an on-line setup. Methods
are available to analyse serotonin (5-HT) well before 5 min
total run time. For example using a dialysis flow rate of 1
µL/min and a 5 µL loop, a time resolution of 5 min can be achieved
in a triple set-up.
Even better time resolution is feasible using a triple channel
set-up. For example, with a chromatographic run time of 9 min,
a time resolution of 3 min is feasible.
